Yeah, yeah, okay, so it would’ve been kinda cool to be in Beijing last week when Michael Phelps won his record-shattering eighth gold medal. But it would’ve been even cooler to have had a ringside seat in Rob Thomas’ office instead: At around the same time the man from Atlantis was making the splash heard ’round the world, the creator of Veronica Mars was sitting down with his beloved, lamented series’ star, Kristen Bell, to discuss bringing the cult hit to the big screen.
Seriously.
The impromptu powwow took place last week in the offices of Thomas’ Hollywood-based production company, which just so happens to be located on the same lot where Bell is shooting Heroes. “Kristen and I ran into each other, and we did discuss a Veronica movie,” confirms Thomas, who says he has also had “a few conversations” with Mars executive producer Joel Silver.
“It’s very tough to focus on it right now with two pilots on my plate,” adds Thomas, referring to his two ABC projects, a reworking of his ’90s dramedy Cupid and an adaptation of the New Zealand series Outrageous Fortune. “But as soon as I have any free time, that’s my top priority.”
For her part, Bell considers it a “major compliment” that people are still interested in Mars. “[Fans] still ask me all the time if the show’s coming back. Emotionally, I don’t want to think about Veronica Mars every day because it really does make me sad.”
Regarding her recent chat with Thomas about a Mars feature, the star of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, perhaps not wanting to jinx things, flashes a Cheshire cat grin and says, “We’ll see.”

I definitely support it!
Oh God, please, make this happen! VM was on the best shows on television, the fans miss it terribly and it deserves a proper ending. A feature movie would be amazing. Thanks for the update Michael!
I would so love to see a Veronica Mars Movie in theaters. I would see as many times as possible and then buy it on dvd and watch it again.
Consider this signature number 2 (after you, of course, Michael!). I promise to go multiple times to the theatre, if that is what it takes!
Yes!! Just as long as it doesn’t get in the way of Eros matching up his 100 couples, a VM movie is fantastic news!
I’d be happy to see VM back in any form. Though Mike, do you know if the story would look more like VM classic or the season 4 proposal? Either way, Logan and Keith had better be in it.
I’d love to see it too as long as they had Logan. I miss my V Mars
I’d take new Veronica Mars any way they want to give it. It makes me sad to watch my season 3 DVDs because I know there’s nothing after that.
I would have said yes without hesitation if season 3 never happened, but that last season really left a bad taste in my mouth. If the movie marked a return to the excellence of season 1, or even the pretty good season 2, I’d be in line.
Oh man, hope this happens … I still have VM withdrawals … do it do it do it!!!
LoVe it!!!!!!!!!
This is the single best news I have received in weeks. I think I have a new lease on life. Are those birds I hear?
I hope this film really does come about! These are such great characters, I’d love to see what they’re up to next.
LoVe!! I miss Veronica Mars so much and now that Moonlight has been canceled I don’t know that I will make it through the t.v. season without a weekly does of Jason Dohring.
So TPTB: I promise to see a Veronica Mars movie the first weekend it opens and probably every weekend it’s in the theater.
Heck YES I want to see a VM movie! Something along the premise of the season 4 pitch with lots of daddy Mars and Logan!
Any way I can Veronica Mars, I’ll take it.
Finally!
YES! YES! YES! YES! (please)
Yes, yes, yes! A thousand yeses!!! The current landscape of television didn’t allow for a 4th season, or even a decent 3rd season wrap-up, but the legion of fans (and VM characters) deserve closure!!!
V for Veronica. Yay! Let’s see this get into the theaters. A more sassy, hip Nancy Drew!!!!! Miss V. Mars. Need my Kristen Bell fix (is it Sept 22nd yet???)
If given a choice between a Veronica Mars movie and a new Batman movie, I’d take Veronica. THAT is how much I want this to get made.
I would love love love a movie!!
Yes, Yes, Yes, bring back Veronica. The sooner the better!
Yes, please! Look at the success of Sex and the City! Come on!
I have never posted a comment on this website before, but the promise of a Veronica Mars movie makes me giddy with happiness!!! I heart Kristen Bell and VM!
I would love it if they made a Veronica Mars movie. I was disappointed that just as they were revealing information about The Castle at the end of the third season the series was getting cancelled. It was also at just such a great point for Logan and Wallace’s characters that I was sad not to find out what happened to them. If there are TV gods out there, I am praying for a movie!
Mike, my heart stopped for a moment when I read your headline. I hadn’t allowed myself to hope for more than a YA novel…but a movie? That thumping noise you hear is my heart jumping. I must have this! What do we need to do to see it happen? I’ll mow Rob Thomas’s lawn for him if that’ll free up some time!
BRING VERONICA TO THE BIG SCREEN! VMars is hands down the coolest, smartest show I’ve ever seen. I think the series is perfect, even if it did end too soon. I can only imagine what a film version would do to bolster interest in the unfairly ignored show.Veronica is my hero! I miss her!
Hell yes! Great news! This seems like a no-brainer. Wouldn’t be very expensive to make, and I know Thomas could come up with a good mystery that would be enticing to even those unfortunate souls who didn’t watch VM.
I need Veronica. Please, let this movie happen.
