Like most folks, the first thing I do when a new DVD box set arrives is assess its regiftability. Are the words “Promo Copy!” embossed on the front? Does the UPC code look like someone took a switchblade to it? Has the plastic wrap been molested? You know, standard stuff.
However, TV actors –- particularly if their mug is on the cover of a box set — focus on something altogether different: themselves. No surprise there. When it comes to vanity, actors are in a class by themselves. But when a certain star of a hit procedural got a look at his show’s season 1 DVD, it wasn’t the size of his head that he was concerned about — it was the size of his head in relation to one of his male co-stars. A co-star, it should be noted, he has long despised.
In fact, so intense is his loathing for his colleague that he went so far as to take out his measuring tape, at which point he discovered that the face of the arguably higher-profile cast member was an inch or two bigger than his own. Faster than you can say “size queen,” Prima Donnie threw a tantrum the likes of which would’ve made Miss Piggy blush. Not surprisingly, when it came time to promote the box set, he flat out refused.
Unbelievably, it looks like the egomaniac’s freak-out is going to end up paying off in the long run. The proof: the cover of the Season 2 box set. So who’s the diva who firmly believes that more is more? Guesses below! (And, of course, we’ll only really read the ones that find a way to use bigger fonts.)

Its My Name is Earl
What’s not on DVD? I would guess Mandy Patinkin with Criminal Minds, but that would be too easy!
I would say William Shatner from Boston Legal. I’ve heard a lot of stories these past few years saying that while he respects him, he doesn’t like James Spader. At all. And this does sound like something Shatner would do.
Stop guessing My Name Is Earl for everything, idiots. That’s just the picture that Ausiello uses for this blind item column
I agree with J. If you look at the dvd cases on Amazon- Spader’s head is huge on Season 1 but looks shrunken on Season 2. Anyone else agree?
Based on DVD evidence, I’d say Criminal Minds (with Thomas Gibson throwing the fit about Mandy Patinkin’s head size). Shatner/Boston Legal looks good too, though I don’t know if I’d classify that as a “procedural” as Auseillo describes it.
I am guessing it is heroes! But, I have no clue who hates someone else in the cast.
David Caruso threw the fit. I don’t know over who, but I’m fairly comfortable guessing it’s him.
nevermind first season dvd of heroes didnt have people on it.
this sounds like it’s for a dvd that’s just being released… meaning that season 2 just finished up
Dan and others: Grab a dictionary or read some TV blogs. And then reread Ausiello’s article. It says “hit procedural.” Which means shows like Criminal Minds, CSI, Law and Order, Without a Trace, Numbers, etc. Heroes and Boston Legal are NOT procedurals.
It’s my name is earl.
my name is earl. I recognize the picture.
wow .. since when is “My Name is Earl” a procedural .. fgs people .. use your brains XD
It could be Criminal Minds – if you look at the season one and season two designs, Thomas Gibson’s head is significantly bigger on the season two box…
Well we all know Thomas Gibson hates Mandy Patinkin. And if you look at the first season DVD Patinkin’s head is much bigger and then on the second season DVD they’re the same size. I don’t know why this would be news now, though, since the show is about to enter its 4th season and the DVDs have been out for a while.
People that don’t read really piss me off.
(a) It’s not My Name is Earl because Ausiello uses that photo for every blind item.
(b) It’s not My Name is Earl because it says “hit procedural”, and if you think Earl is a procedural then you could probably use a brain scan.
It doesn’t say “crime procedural”, so Boston Legal could work, but I always thought Shatner and Spader got along great (hence their great on-camera chemistry). Maybe it’s Numb3rs? For the Season 1 DVD, Rob Morrow and David Krumholtz’ faces are about the same size (Krumholtz’ might be a bit bigger) but from Season 2 onward, Morrow’s is way bigger — even though arguable Krumholtz is the real “star” of the show.
I think the picture is a clue. it could be That 70s Show.
Gotta be Criminl Minds or Missing.
SARA, the pic is from my name is earl. I hadnt heard that Jason Lee didn’t like his co-stars, but i’m not surprised.
Paul Little – You should check out Shatner’s recent interview with Parade (it’s online at parade.com), in which he describes his unfriendly first meeting with Spader and states, “Him, I don’t love. But certainly I like him and respect him.” So, no, they’re not best buds and I could see there being some professional rivalry between them. But the season 2 DVD set came out 2 years ago, so if it is about them than Ausiello is really late with this item.
OK: if it’s criminal minds, why now? the season 2 DVD is out since last fall, season 3 is coming.
and for the CM’s season 1’s dvdset cover: there’s no need for measuring, it’s obvious.
I’m surprised some of you even have time to guess. I would have thought you’d be too busy searching for the MIA network. {Pounds head against wall}
Ummmmm… do you people not understand what a “procedural” is? It’s not MY NAME IS EARL, or THAT ’70s SHOW, or BOSTON LEGAL! Pity, too, ‘cos otherwise I would have said Rob Lowe on BROTHERS AND SISTERS, season 2 of which is due out on DVD in September.
I don’t think it’s Criminal Minds either. The first season DVD has Mandy front and center and everyone else’s head coming out in V formation all smaller than his. Second Season Gibson and Mandy are in the front side to side. Mandy’s head is still a bit bigger.
I will be doing some investigating DVD covers to learn more.
Um, was this a just released season 2 box set? Because if it wasn’t, it’s obviously criminal minds. (I love Mandy, but he’s got some diva issues)
If it’s not criminal minds, I’m going to take a shot in the dark and go with NCIS or Law and Order (one of the three).
For the last time, Ausiello uses that My Name is Earl pic for all of the Blind Items. It doesn’t mean that every Blind Item is about My Name is Earl.
It’s not Numb3rs. Rob Morrow and David Krumholtz are friends off camera.
My vote goes with Criminal Minds. I feel as though that cast has a lot of behind the scenes drama.
I don’t know if it’s important but Michael did not say former co star.
Any more hints Michael?
It’s that classic procedural My Name is…Duh. All the CSI’s and Numbers and Criminal Minds are on thier 3rd or more box set. Numb3rs, to me is the only one that fits, Rob Morrow is the star but David Krumholtz is ARGUABLY a bigger star. For all the CSI’s the main guy is the bigger star, and usually shows up biggest on the covers. Rob Morrow’s head is always bigger on the numb3rs sets though, doesn’t seem to ever have changed. I’d say bones is the only newer procedural that’s past it’s third season, but those two stars definately get along from everything i’ve read. I could see the boston legal crew not liking each other but in the first season Spader’s bigger, than they’re the same size but spader is leaning back so Shatner wins, then they’re both the same size, then in the fourth one Shatner’s smaller, so if it had been a problem it’s not solved. I’m sure it’s not numbers, but that’s my best guess based on how ausiello worded it.
I don’t see how anyone could argue that Thomas (one other hit show that faded fast and wouldn’t die) Gibson is arguably more famous than Mandy Patinkin. Still, let’s argue it
