Snappy Judgments: 2008 Emmy Nominations!

Jul 17, 2008, 10:39 AM | by Michael Ausiello

Categories: 2008 Emmy Awards

Fridaynightlights_l

I'm Super-Ecstatic About:
* Lost re-entering the best drama race!
* Pushing Daisies' Lee Pace and Kristin Chenoweth.
* Samantha Who's Christina Applegate and Jean Smart.
* Damages' Glenn Close, Ted Danson and Zeljko Ivanek.
* Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston.
* All of 30 Rock's 17 nominations, but particularly the one for the riotous Will Arnett.

Yawns to:
• Tony Shalhoub
• Seven nods apiece for Two and a Half Men and Boston Legal.
* Entourage has a ho-hum year and still makes the cut.
* Dexter for best drama series. (Sorry, but it's really not all that.)

I'm Super-Pissed About:
• The absence of any major nods for Friday Night Lights. Particularly egregious: Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton get snubbed again.
* Pushing Daisies shut out of best comedy race. Also, Chi McBride's inspired supporting work goes unnoticed.
* No best comedy nod for Ugly Betty. The hilarious Michael Urie (the funniest sidekick on TV) and Ana Ortiz (the funniest sister on TV) were also given the shaft. And, no, I'm not singling them out because they appeared in the premiere of Ausiello TV. OK, maybe I did a little.
* Bubkes for the women of Mad Men.
* No love for Big Love's near-perfect sophomore season.
* Emmy misses its last chance to honor The Wire.
* Jim Parsons' Big snub.

OK, that's my two cents' worth. Now it's your turn. Post your own snappy judgments below.

i agree that the emmys this year kinda sucked although i realy loved seeing don rikkles and lily tomlin but one show i also feel was over looked and cant help but wounder why was the l word that has an exseptional cast among them jennifer beals and sybil sheperd to name a few and not so much as a nod to the inovativeness of ilene chalkin i hope for its final seasson that the emmys will rember them and there amazing cast writers and all the people who have created a show that has helped the world to see how some others live there life

Phyllis Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

Jensen Ackles is the best actor on tv and perhaps film as well. To overlook this very talented young man is a travesty that should be corrected. These people go with the popular Hollywoodites and not the good actors.

Nicole Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

I haven't seen the list but if Natalie Dormer for Tudor's isn't on it, she was cheated.
From reading the comments, I understand MCH is nominated for Dexter....GREAT!
Totally deserved. The best show on TV.

jo Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

And I would like to add that if Jensen is as undeserving as '"Anonymous" of July 17 writes how come on almost every site talking about emmy nominations he is being talked about. For a guy that is not as established and well known as many actors on TV today and definitely not as old, He is being praised up and down these sites. I dont think all of us can be wrong. And considereing he is one of the few being mentioned continously. Makes you think don't it?

Nikki Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 11:36 AM EST

Emmy's gets it wrong... AGAIN. Just the fact that they don't acknowledge The Wire makes this whole process laughable. Jim Parsons so deserves a nomination. Same old nominess. I won't be watching again this year. My prediction: Low ratings.

jo Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 07:14 AM EST

Jensen ackles totally deserves the praise he is getting on the site,He is totally deserving. He gives a 110% and you know it Micahael Ausiello!

Twombly Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 12:42 AM EST

It shouldn't matter if Jensen Ackles is not nominated for an Emmy! the FANS know that he can act and therefore the absence of a nomination shouldn't make a difference. Whoever decides which show or actor should be nominated is clearly picking & choosing which show they like best..not which show/actor deserves a nod. And there is no such thing as SUPERIOR VIEWING! There is only personal choice.Just to set the record straight, Jensen Ackles may be good looking but that has nothing to do with his acting ability, he truly CAN act. And this is coming from a person who is NOT a teenager.

Twombly Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 12:40 AM EST

Chris Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

Boston Legal, Damages & Mad Men for best Drama? This is a joke, right? Jericho gets punted, again.

Where is Survivor in Best Reality? Nice nod to Jeff Probst in best reality host but I think it's unfathomable that the show didn't make the cut.

Cheers to outstanding cast nominee 'The Tudors', boy do they deserve that one.

oh and fyi, Smallville and Supernatural were both nominated for sound editing. Nice, but a shame Jensen was overlooked, he really is talented.

REALLY disappointed with the Henry Ian Cusack and Robert Sean Leonard snubs.

ej Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 08:05 AM EST

Jensen Ackles is a totally viable candidate for best actor. He has done some amazing work. Padalecki, however, is not. He is mediocre at best.

Justin_timez Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 03:18 AM EST

I'm disappointed "Big Love"'s Ginnifer Goodwin didn't make the cut for "Lead Actress"

PamLa Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

While I was glad to see Jericho get a nod for special effects, I don't get how Emmy could ignore the writing talents of Carol Barbee and company or the acting talents of Lennie James, Skeet Ulrich, Shoshanna Stern and, especially, Brad Beyer. Brad's performance in saying goodbye to his dead sister was one of the most compelling scenes in television I've seen in a long time. What a gyp!!

PGP Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

Lets not forget Matthew Fox once again getting snubbed and where the hell is LOST for oustanding writing...I think that The Constant deserved a nod!

anonymous Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

I'm with Mousitsa. I haven't been a teen in 20 years also and enjoy watching Supernatural. I believe Jensen and Jared are two of the best actors out there and should have definitely been nominated.

GGp Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

Have you ever SEEN Dexter? It is more than all that... it is the best drama hands down on television

goldend Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

it's like they're trying to have even lower raitings than last year.

Melissa Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

Where's the love for Mariska Hargitay? Over at tvguide, you raved about her and L&O: SVU. Now, that you're at EW, nada. I am super excited for her nomination and I hope that she wins.

Frauke Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

They overlooked NCIS again! (except for the best stunts category...) That is such a fine show with such fine actors. Just because it is mostly ignored by the critics that does not mean that it deserves that.

And they should have honored Moonlight. The actors and the camera stuff may be merely average, but if you see the whole picture it was a really wonderful show.

carina Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 08:13 AM EST

Ellen Pompeo was definitely overlooked (AGAIN). She practically saved season 4's Grey's Anatomy with great and very subtle acting. I guess it doesn't pay to play a lead character who's deemed as anti-hero. Maybe the Emmy voters don't want their characters to be very realistic???

Tammecka H. Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 02:45 AM EST

What the hell?! For all those who claim Jensen and Jared are lousy actors, obviously you have never seen their performances. I'm not a teenage girl and I'm someone within the industry who is not blind to see that these guys will go very far in this field. The Emmy are known for overlooking many exceptional young talents! The Oscar does even worse job!

Sharon Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 02:11 AM EST

Who is Charlie Sheen boinking in the Academy to keep getting these nominations for his crappy show year after year? The lists of Snubs is long and, as evidenced here, debatable .... but substitute any of them for that low-grade "comedy" & its actors, please!

afroman Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

the wire is too good to be nominated for an emmy. it is only for the small amount of tv viewers who appreciate some of the most intricate plots in television history

Lynda R. Cable Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 05:56 PM EST

Worst overlook- Big Love and most of its cast. Should have at least gotten a token nod to any one of the wives - especially Chloe Sevigny.

Aaron Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

What about the writers for JERICHO??? It is the most compelling drama in recent TV programing. Lennie James also did an outstanding job and deserved a nod.

Brandy Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

I am also super-excited about the Pushing Daisies nominations, especially the art direction. The show is so aesthetically unique.
I'm equally annoyed that Big Love didn't receive any nominations. It's an incredible show with amazing acting, writing, and directing. Chloe Sevigny is magic in that show.

greg Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:28 PM EST

Unbelievable that The Wire gets treated like crap. Its easily the most realistic, complex and compelling show on TV yet these idiots continue to ignore it. You know the process is screwed up when crap like 2 and a half men gets nominated and Pushing Dasies does not.

Brian Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:16 PM EST

ARE YOU INSANE, AUSIELLO?!?!?! DEXTER IS BEYOND AMAZING.

Christina Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

I can't believe you said that about Dexter. It is one of the very best dramas on television, and I'd say one of the best shows of all time. Last season was superb, and Michael C. Hall is brilliant. It clearly is all that and so much more. And I'm clearly not the only one who thinks this. I'm a big House fan and would love to see the show win, but I'd be completely okay if Dexter won. Because House season 4 clearly wasn't their best season. Yay for Hugh Laurie. Here's to hoping he wins, but I'd also be happy if MCH wins. I agree with a previous commenter about Robert Sean Leonard. This guy acted his heart out. His performance was so moving, emotional..just heartwrenching. He and Anne Dudek both. I really thought he had a shot this year. I am so naive. The Wire should, at the very least, get a special honor like The Sopranos did last year. It needs to be recognized in some capacity. I really wish Mary McDonnell had made the cut, but I knew that wouldn't happen.

Snoskred Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST

You guys can't really expect these emmy people to understand Dexter. How can they take one episode out and look at that and try to make any judgements on the acting or the show based on that? Dexter is something that develops across a season, and unless the people voting for the emmys are fans of the show they just won't get it. Clearly, they are not the only people who don't get it. But for those of us who do get it, our respect for the show is the best award a show can ever ask for.

And that goes for everyone whinging that their show did not get nominated. The Emmys are truly insignificant compared to the fans. Write a fan letter, send an email, blog about the show you love, create a fan website - let the show and the actors know how much *you* appreciate their work.

Annie Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

I think the biggest snub is Robert Sean Leonard for Best Support Actor in a Drame. I love Hugh Laurie, and he should win, but Wilson and House make the show what it is. And RBS in the season finale was absolutely phenomenal!

Another snub- Mia (not sure how to spell her last name) who plays Sohpie on In Treatment. Psyched that Byrns got nominated, but the girl just stole every scene she was in!

And on the Two and a Half Men/Boston Legal front- never been a fan of the 1st, I think it just keeps getting nominated bc it's the only (or almost the only) traditional sitcom comedy on tv. I love James Spader and even liked BL when it was first on, but I think there are just too many new good shows that are being overlooked. Alan Shore is a great character, (as is Denny Crane) at some point it's just too much.

Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

No Robert Sean Leonard and no Anne Dudek...what the frak is wrong with these voters?!?!

Snsetblaze Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

My disappointment:
NO MARY MCDONNELL FROM BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. No series itself for best drama.

While I am a Boston Legal fan and a fan of the actors in particular, I don't agree that the actors deserved the nods this year, especially Candace Bergen. I do think the drama nomination was deserved.

But there should be a separate category for drama/comedies - which Boston Legal and Desperate Housewives are (and to some extent House) so straight dramas such as the Wire or Battlestar don't get left out.

And Tony Shalhoub again?

romello Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

I think it's an absolute DISGRACE that "The Wire" was once again ignored. This has been the BEST show on televison since it's first season and once again it's ignored while utter trash gets nominated over and over again. No one in the entertainment community ever speaks out on this injustice and once again pure mediocrity gets rewarded.

jones Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

What I am glad about:
-Lost & Micheal Emerson
-Grey's being omitted

What I am annoyed about:
-Two and a Half Men nominations. It is not funny and WAY overhyped.
-The Wire being omitted.

Leanne Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

I would have boycotted watching the ceremony if Michael Emerson didn't get nominated. Thanks, Academy, for keeping me tuned in this year.

sally Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

Where is Jericho for best drama. For best actor in drama. For best actress in drama. For best supporting actress or actor. They must not know what makes a really great show.

Jeff Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

Wow, your wrong on Dexter...Michael, you really aren't all that either but I guess I'll keep reading your column.

Julie Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

I say if a award academy doesn't want to recognize an awesome show such as Supernatural then let it be: they don't know what they're missing. I am really sad that the show, the boys and the crew didn't get nominated but we still are the most loyal fans of a TV show, and I'm sure Eric Kripke knows that. Just wait until next year's nomination and see for yourselves what you have been missing on because fourth season will be one heck of a season, and why? Because the cast and crew know they have to work harder every year because of the fan reponse they are getting!
Good luck to all the nominees, but again you are missing out on some awesome show that's Supernatural!!!

Response to Jack re: Ellen Page Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

Ellen Page was in An American Crime, a TV movie where she stunningly portrayed a teenage victim of a horrific real life crime. Catherine Keener was nominated for playing the woman who tortured Ellen's character.

fitzwdarcey Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:10 AM EST

Why the constant ignoring of Battlestar Gallactica?

Lauren Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

Seriously... Battlestar Galactica deserves SO MUCH MORE!!! Its the best show on TV and they get nothing for it...AGAIN. It blows all the other dramas out of the water!!! Hopefully next year during BSG's final season they'll get reconized! grr...

tets Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 07:29 AM EST

Where is Ellen Pompeo? Yay for Michael Emerson!

l Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 06:59 AM EST

Its unbelievable The Wire actors were snubbed again! They support great writing by making it real. Were the voters uncomfortable with how real it was?

Jack Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 06:29 AM EST

What would Ellen Page got nominated for an emmy for?

confused viewer Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 05:52 AM EST

who is 30 rock sleeping with?

Earl Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 01:39 AM EST

Okay, why is Amy Poehler in the supporting actress catergory? Performer in variety/music series, sure, fine, but this is clearly the wrong catergory!

YAY! Lost is back where it belongs! I think it should win, but Mad Men will probably take it. Good show.
Michael Emerson could well win supporting actor for his amazing work last season.

Come f'ing on! Two And A Half Men again?? Its a mildy amusing show, and Jon Cryer and Holland Taylor are good, but does anyone think this is a better show than, say, How I Met Your Mother or Flight Of The Concords!

Well, its happened...The Wire has been screwed one final time, just like David Simon's previous masterpiece, Homicide. I'm happy for the writing nomination, but its not enough. Meanwhile, Greys Anatomy has wrangled up another bunch of nominations...

A sigh of relief....no Family Guy for best comedy.

I'm probably in the minority now, but James Spader deserves every single win and nomination he gets. Best performance on TV.

Joey Connick Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 01:38 AM EST

Actually yeah, Dexter really is all that. And more.

Leah Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 01:19 AM EST

This has got to be Chandra Wilson's year.
She has been over-looked for too long.
She needs to win, win, win, win!!!!!!!!

SI Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 01:01 AM EST

i cant believe supernatural isnt catagorised for anything :(

Krista Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 12:29 AM EST

I think they snubbed Battlestar Galactica actors and material which is considered by some fans and some in the industry to be one of the best shows on television. Maybe they'll pay more attention to this it's last season. Edward-James Olmos, Mary McDonald, Katie Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, are all an excellent cast. And of course I was hopeful for Jensen Ackles for a nomination, but he is in a genre show on the cw, and it's geared toward the teens. (and trust me, I'm not a teen.) I think once he pays his dues a little and finds a decent gig the guy will take Hollywood by storm. He's a great actor that I've had the privilege to see grow as a performer, and he's just gotten more amazing. And you're darn straight he's hot! Get over yourself! I can think with my head AND my lower quarters at the same time, unlike a man, who can only think with one region at a time! You're just jealous! Jamie Bamber's hot too! Woo! Ha ha!

Oh, and Dexter's and Mad Men are the bomb.

JCSATL Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 12:10 AM EST

I pretty much agree with you except regarding Dexter. I think it's an amazing show and Michael C. Hall should get the win. He deserves it for playing such a complicated role to perfection.

It's a shame about the FNL snubs, in both the drama category and the acting categories. Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton are both incredible. And some of the supporting cast is as well.

It's a shame Entourage (after a very bad season) made it in but Pushing Daisies didn't.

Kenny Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 11:27 PM EST

So the academy choose Two & a Half Man and Boston Legal over Friday Night Lights and Pushing Daisies. Wow. Now I understand why conservatives rag on Hollywood. Mad Men owns the Best Drama Emmy.

Emily Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

They got so many things RIGHT, especially NPH and Lee Pace. I am bummed about he lack of love for HIMYM, Lost and Scrubs. Both shows have such talented actors (granted, they did get some nods)!

PeasPpl Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:02 PM EST

FNL and The Wire should have definitly gotten nods in the major categories. Particularly Kyle Chandler, Connie Briton and Michael Kenneth William (Omar).

Also, Cat Deely is the most awesomest host ever and deserves some recognition for this.

Paulette Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 10:00 PM EST

Congrats to all the nominees.

I am always amazed how people diss James Spader for his various nominations. The tightrope he walks weekly between drama and comedy is fantastic. He is a wonderful actor.

The show I must admit is not truely a drama and I can see why people do not agree with its placement in that category. Unfortuneately, there is not a placement for farce with a tinge of drama. Thus it ends up in the dramatic category because they occassionally have an episode that's tone is primarily serious, and it is one of these that garners their nomination for best drama. The awards are based on one episode. Think of it like the episode is a mini movie. They are being judged on one show, not the entire years work.

Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 09:53 PM EST

Oh Mousitsa, you are REALLY embarrassing yourself now. See, those who are actually educated and intelligent don't need to talk about how educated and intelligent they are. And trust me, sweetie, you are a teenie. Literal age has little to do with it; it's about a lack of emotional maturity and inability to think critically and you, my dear, fit the bill on both.

Kelly H Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

Thanks, Mousitsa, for voicing very eloquently my opinion of Jensen Ackles and Supernatural. If people would stop referring to the show as only for teen-aged girls, perhaps more people would tune in and discover what they're missing - great stories about family and loyalty and honor, as well as top-notch acting. And, oh yeah, the music is good, too.

guiver1 Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 08:54 PM EST

Glad to see Jericho got one nomination for special effects. Should have been more.

Cher Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 08:37 PM EST

Glad Jericho got a nomination for Special Effects(wish you had mentioned that.) Disappointed that Brad Beyer did not get a nomination. The dead scene of Bonnie alone deserved a nomination if not the Emmy!!

NightShade Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 08:24 PM EST

Cheering for the Special Effects Nomination for Jericho. Jeers for not recognizing Lennie James, Skeet Ulrich, Esai Morales, Shoshanna Stern, and Brad Beyer in any catagories. These actors are top of the line world class, and deserved a nod nomination for performances that were better than most movies I've seen.

Marlene Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 08:19 PM EST

I'm glad to see that Jericho got at least one nomination, although I think it should have received more.

~ Mousitsa ~ Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

To Anonymous posting at 7:00 pm... sweetie I haven't been a "teenie" in close to 20 years. And last time I checked my college-educated brain with several degrees was located ABOVE my waist and not below it. The Pretty-Factor of an actor will only hold my attention for a short time if the acting is crap. And while JENSEN ACKLES is certainly pleasant to look at, he has more acting talent in his little pinky than some of the other nominees have in their whole body. Too bad he is in a genre show on what is considered a teen network and thus not deserving of the recognition which he earns week after week on screen. So next time, please pull YOUR head out of YOUR a** before making such sweeping generalities about the fans, most of whom are NOT teens and actually like to use their brains when watching something of quality.

artzylady Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

WooHoo!!!!! Jericho was nominated for an Emmy for special effects... I'm not surprised at all. The finale scene with Jake piloting the plane and the dogfight that ensued was priceless and the very first time ever for a TV series! Here's hoping it'll win and then surprise everyone (except for its fans of course) when it's brought back on a different network!

Sienna Scorpio Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

My God! This must be the WHITEST EMMY EVER!

Kelly Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

How could the Emmys miss Brad Beyer's stellar performance on CBS' "Jericho?" With barely a whisper, he kept viewers in tears as Stanley signed goodbye - and "thank you..."- to deaf kid sister Bonnie (Shoshanna Stern). Shoshanna would have been a great pick too.

chantilla Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 07:01 PM EST

Boston Legal is the best show on TV these days. James Spader and William Shatner are brilliant and deserve every nomination and Emmy they've gotten. And Candice Bergen is brilliant in it as well. Hope she wins.

I'm glad Entourage is also in the running. I love that show.

And Monk is something that still holds my attention on Friday nights, unlike FNL.

Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 07:00 PM EST

The Supernatural/Jensen teenies are really embarrassing themselves. They need to stop thinking with their vaginas (or penises if they're gay men). SPN is an entertaining show but Emmy material it is absolutely not, and Jensen Ackles will rise no higher than a C-list actor on a CW show or in bad horror movies. Just because you think he's OMG SO HOTT doesn't make that any less true.

Christa Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

I am once again filled with bitter rage that I will have to watch (because as much as I disagree with most of the nominees, I can't not watch) James Spader holding Kyle Chandler's Emmy come September.
Even "I'm F***ing Matt Damon" got a nomination! No Pushing Daisies for best comedy, no writing nom for "The Constant," no Scrubs (not that it's a suprise after all these years), and yet Two and a Half Men and Boston Legal are nominated again. Someone please remind me why we care about this.

Robin Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 06:22 PM EST

What SHOULD be:

SUPERNATURAL, Best Drama

Jensen Ackles, Best Actor

What? CW show? Won't ever happen? Right, just the same old, same old, never giving recognition for superior television or truly outstanding acting. Which proves what I've always suspected--the Emmys are just a popularity contest!

Sean Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

I'm Super-Ecstatic About: Lost and Dexter (Something must be wrong with you to think its not all that)
Yawn to: Mad Men - watched the whole season. found it pretty but extremely boring, nothing ever happens on that show.
I'm Super-Pissed About: no love for Big Love!
Elizabeth Perkins getting snubbed for her best year yet on Weeds.
two and a half men - need I say more?
America Ferrara - Ugly Betty was fun last year but now the whole show has just gotten annoying.
BSG getting snubbed. again.
Entourage - I hate this show so much I cant even watch it. plus Ive heard the fans hated the last season.

Ashley Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

What about Battlestar Galactica. Even if the show is still too Sci-Fi for Emmy voter's virgin eyes or whatever, Mary McDonnell's heartbreaking performance as the president of all humanity dying of cancer deserved the respect of a nomination. I'm tired of quality television losing out to a popularity contest. Boston Legal...really?

Concerned Citizen Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 06:07 PM EST

For Best Comedy, it's probably either going to be 30 Rock or Two and a Half Men.

30 Rock veered off track a couple of times this season, but it always managed to redeem itself. It was also a bit too preachy this year, which kind of irked me. Other than that, it definitely did well.

Two and a Half Men has been on a roll for the past few seasons. The first two seasons were good, but the past three have been spectacular. The writers strike didn't even effect the show's writing, which has been razor sharp. Based on his performances this season, I wouldn't be surprised if Jon Cryer wins. In summary; a very deserving season.

The Office isn't going to win. I loved season two, sorta liked season three, and tolerated season four. I was really upset at the writing this year. Hopefully next season will do much better.

Haven't been watching Entourage lately, but from what I heard, it hasn't been going so well.

I have season six of Curb Your Enthusiasm on DVD, but haven't seen it yet.

Although I just knew he would get overlooked (due to genre of the show, the fact that the CW does nothing to promote it, and because he is absolutely gorgeous - which means probably too many don't look past his looks), I was still disappointed that Jensen Ackles wasn't nominated for Lead Actor in a Drama for Supernatural.

He is incredibly talented and makes his character (Dean) into a living, breathing person ... it's easy to forget the man is acting. And with only 2 regular characters on their show - both leads put in so many hours, and yet manage to be "there" in every scene of every episode.

The LOST episode submitted for consideration for best drama series was The Constant. Who's episode was that? Desmond's, played by the amazingly talented Henry Ian Cusick. How they could have nominated the show based on that episode and then leave out the actor most responsible for it? It makes no sense! I'm thrilled for Michael Emerson because he's so deserving too, but to leave out Ian was just plain wrong!!

C C Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

I think Dexter is a far better series than Mad Men and Damages! Dexter asks exisential questions about human nature, examining what we, as individuals, consider "evil" and "not evil". I wish it had any chance for an upset win.

Will agree on Big Love, though. They got hosed.

I'm admittedly a fan of Two and a Half Men, and I can objectively say that there was no way they deserved a nom for comedy series.

Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

I watch a many of the shows nominated like The Closer, House etc and they are all good shows. However, The Wire is in a completely different league and I think the PTB do not know what to do with it. Best show ever on television.

Howard Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

I know Scrubs had an off-year, but I still think John C. McGinley should get a "you screwed me for six years" nomination in place of Jon Cryer. And on the subject of 2.5 Men, I usually like the show, but they had an off-year too; they took the nod from Pushing Daisies or How I Met Your Mother (don't get me started on their snub; they deserved more than one major nod). And Charlie Sheen took a nomination away from Jason Lee or Josh Radnor.

I'd have liked to see Jim Parsons get a nom, but that category is so very very tight. Heck, you could come up with a second comedy Supporting Actor category just from NBC (Ethan Suplee, John Krasinski, McGinley, Donald Faison and Jack McPraver).

I am excited that three of the five nominations for Outstanding Choreography went to So You Think You Can Dance(s) :

Routine: Hummingbird and Flower / 'The Chairman's Waltz' • Wade Robson, Choreographer

Routine: Transformers / 'Fuego' • Shane Sparks, Choreographer

Routine: Table / 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)' • Mandy Moore, Choreographer

I hope Mandy wins!

And yes Michael, sorry, I'm still watching.

God, there's a lot of testy comments here. Everyone needs to simmer down (especially the Dexter fans who think that bad-mouthing Ausiello is an intelligent way to argue a point) - it's just entertainment!

Steph F. Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

In total agreement with most comments.
Yes, where is the love for Big Love?
Where is Peggy Olson, my favorite Mad Woman?
I've heard differently about Dexter, I can't say think because I don't watch it. (shame on me, i have no tolerance for blood/guts)
Ugly Betty had a meh season with an even more meh season finale, I'm only excited for the new season because of the new love interest for Betty aka Jamie from 30 Rock.
WHERE IS MARY MCDONNELL? hohum first half season of BSG yes (imho), but at least show the wonderful actors some love! My bet goes that season 4.5 will knock off socks and finally score some real Emmy nods.

CL Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

Matt Fox should have gotten a nom for best actor, but then, they didn't give him an Emmy last year for his amazing turn in the S3 finale, TTLG. So, it doesn't surprise me that the Academy is up to its shenannigans once again

Jason Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

Yawn to:

Boston Legal for Best Drama (Sorry, but it sucks.)

I watched the 2 seasons of Dexter on demand in less than a month. Good show and deserving of the nomination.

Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

For the person who thinks Jensen Ackles shouldn't be nominated. You obviously have never seen the man act. His acting is on par with those nominated and a heck of a lot better than some nominated. Please, don't knock taste because you have issues. If you don't think Jensen can act, you don't know good acting. The man deserved an emmy, more than some who got the nob. That would include Patrick Dempsey.

myshowsalwayscanceled Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

Yes for Dexter - and MCH should have been nominated and a yeah for the Closer and Kyra , the others I really don't watch. Of course my alltime favorites this year Torchwood and Dr Who aren't there as well as my cancelled shows.

J Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

What are you talking about? Dexter is perhaps the best show on TV at the moment. This season was amazing.

TVwatcher Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

Sorry but Dexter is all that and Michael Hall should have been nominated. He has taken a very strange show and made it a must watch. He plays the part so well that I know so many people caught up in the show I never dreamed would have watched it

Sandy Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

Et tu, Ausiello?

OK, maybe you never thought "Dexter" the show was all that good, but are you also rescinding your high hopes for MCH to finally win for his great work...or is he not "all that" anymore either?

Amy Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

WHERE IS ROBERT SEAN LEONARD?!?! His performance was unbelievable in the season finale alone.

Kevin H. Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

Hey Aus, you forgot to mention that ACCORDING TO JIM got an emmy nod for something behind the scenes-wise. I think the apocalypse is upon us.

Hzk Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

High ratings may not equal good, but it seems that does affect how people vote for the shows they deem worthy.

CoreyBat Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

I'm estatic about 30Rock's 17 noms but nothing for the lovely ladies of Wisteria Lane?!

Pedro Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

As I was reading the list and not seeing any Wire nods, my first thought was - wait, did they forget to submit it? but there is one for writing, so i guess they must just be incredibly dumb for not giving the nomination for best drama (dexter, really? it's just not as good as you people think it is...)

Anthony Hoffman Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

High ratings do not equal good.

Hzk Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

Everyone has their favorite so it's ok to be upset or happy if yours made the list or didn't, but you really shouldn't slam a show that you do not watch. I believe everyone who was nominated probably deserves it. As for James Spader being nominated....I don't watch Boston Legal regularly, but if you ever sit down for one episode and really watch him, he is a fantastic actor. Charlie Sheen and 2 1/2 Men??? I have no idea if this show is worthy or not since I do not watch it, but it is a very highly rated show so obviously there are quite a few who think it should be on the list.

Josh Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

I agree with everything you said Michael with the exception of your Dexter comment. I just recently got into the show and think it is absolutely brilliant. Normally, it's hard to make people sympathize with a serial killer (you'd think lol) but the writers of Dexter really pull it off. That and Michael C. Hall shines in the role!

scifidavid Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

I've got to disagree with you regarding Tony Shalhoub. His Adrian Monk is the finest ongoing comedic performance in series television

ANTHONY HOFFMAN Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

I just don't get it. What the hell does Boston Legal or Two and 1/2 Men do to challenge our minds with unique stories, characters we care about or issues we can relate to? Mayble I'm taking this too seriously, but geez. Two and a 1/2 Men: dumb, broad s**tcom. Boston Legal: unbelieveable, implausible Ally McBealesque crap.

Kaitlin Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

No mention of Mary McDonnell's snub as leading lady in a drama for Battlestar? What's up with that Ausiello? I know that it was a tight race, but Sally Field is annoying and Mariska Hargitay again instead of McDonnell? COME THE FRAK ON. And of course I'm pissed about the lack of big noms for the cast of FNL and the fact that HIMYM was snubbed alongside Pushing Daisies in the best comedy race. Yay for NPH's nom though!

Mel Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

Jane I'm sure I'm not the first person to tell you this but you are a B!tch. End of conversation.
