Casting Scoops: Alexander to 'Criminal Minds,' Bateman to 'Psych,' Brolin to 'SVU,' and More!

Jasonjustinejames_l Stop what you’re doing and read this exclusive casting roundup I just compiled. Seriously, it’ll be the most important thing you do all day.

•    Jason Alexander has booked a killer (ha!) guest stint on CBS’ Criminal Minds. “It’s a really crazy role,” says executive producer Ed Bernero. “He's going to come in and turn himself in, but we have no idea who his victims are. So we have to reverse profile.” The episode’s slated to kick off November sweeps.

•    James Streisand Brolin is headed to Law & Order: SVU, where he’ll play an ex-military man with a connection to Chris Meloni’s Stabler in the show’s season premiere. The episode will also feature Chris Elliott as a stalkerish-looking dude who’s accused of being — OMFG! — a stalker.

•    Justine Bateman, who’s turning into quite the serial guest star of late (see also Men in Trees, Desperate Housewives, etc), is adding an episode of Psych to her ever-expanding resume. She’ll play Victoria, the long-discussed-but-never-seen estranged wife of Det. Lassiter (Timothy Omundson). Psych kicks off its third season on July 18. But you already knew that.

•    Prison Break is adding a new branch to Jodi Lyn O’Keefe’s family tree this season. Producers are looking for an actress to play Gretchen’s sister, a run-of-the-mill suburban mom who’s less than thrilled to get a visit from her sis. And I’d be heading into serious spoiler territory if I told you why that is. So I won’t.

See, aren’t you glad you stopped what you were doing? Thought so. Now, tell me: Which of these casting scoopbits are you most (and least) excited about? The comments section is open and ready to accept your votes!

Why the hostility with Brolin? The guy's been a working actor since the 60's. As for casting, he looks like retired army. He looks good for almost 70, and it's a shame his wife always has to be mentioned whenever he works. By the way, they should get some respect for being together 12 years in Hollywood.

S&J Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

Yay!! We're FINALLY meeting Victoria!! Maybe that will put an end to all this Lassiter/Juliet NONSENSE!! :) Shawn and Juliet FOREVER!! :)

Tiffany Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 11:40 PM EST

We're meeting Victoria! I could not possibly be more excited. I have no opinion on Justine Bateman as I hardly even know who she is, but I am so looking forward to a more Carlton-focused storyline, even if it's only secondary.

Mandy Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

Wildness about Jason Alexander. I think we all thought George could become a psycho killer one day, so this will be interesting.

bcolumbia Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

Definitely least excited about Justine Bateman. She's still a lousy actress who stunk up Men in Trees and Desperate Housewives when she was on those shows. I still blame her a little bit for MIT's cancellation, because the storyline with her character really dragged down the show and made it really tedious to watch. Also, she hasn't aged well. I know that's a mean thing to say, but she just looks tired all the time, like she needs a lot of sleep.

JokerJokerJoker! Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

Mr. Barbra should stay out of the sun. He looks like all kinds of crap-beaten-out-of-it leather.

Amelie Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST

Ausiello: These are all amazing casting scoops. How do you know all my favorite shows. Okay, so I'm not a huge Criminal Minds fan. Nor can I take Jason Alexander in a drama. But Bateman on PSYCH? Brolin on SVU? I almost had awesome blossom coming out of my nose! Great news. Now, can you just get Bradley Cooper back on TV permanently? I'll be your bestie.

Sue Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

Velveetahead, I think that was Lassiter's partner in the beginning of the show who left and was replaced by Juliet. Not his wife.

velveetahead Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

I thought Lassiter's wife was in the pilot episode of Psych and she transferred when they became estranged. That's how he got a new partner in the next episode. Am I remembering that wrong?

AC Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

Hey, I'll bet the sister is the star of the PRISON BREAK spin off CHERRY HILL!

Redesign? Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

Yes, yes, casting scoops are great -- but where is the space to comment on the magazine's redesign? Allegedly they want to hear from us, but no link, no space to comment on this boring, colorless, cartoon-filled design. Snooze.

j Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

Really love Psych and eager to see Lassy and his ex. USA has a great lineup of shows that we need during this horrible summer season!

Steph Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

Those Ebony and Ivory promos for Psych are too funny! I crack up at Dule Hill. He is not afraid to be a ham.

mj Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

none, actually..i'm sad to say

Amber Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

Holy crap I am already smiling at the idea of Justine as Lassiter's wife....I can't wait to see it!

Jennifer Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

Didn't like Justine on Desperate Housewives, absolutely hated her on Men in Trees.
Can't wait to see Jason Alexander on CM. I love the concept of reverse profiling.
Never watched Seinfeld. I can only tolerate Jodi Lynn because, well because it's Prison Break. Her character seems a bit miscast.

Adie Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 08:11 AM EST

Sasha Alexander as the sister? Think there was a rumour that she would be joining the cast. Wonder how the sibling dynamic is going to play out. Could be interesting.

Michelle Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 08:00 AM EST

Jason Alexander will be great on Criminal Minds, but I'm even more excited about Wil Wheaton's upcoming episode of that show. If you saw his terrific portrayal of Walter on CSI, you'll know why.

Lady Fabry Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 07:11 AM EST

I am SO excited about L&O:SVU and Criminal Minds. Watch both shows religiously and can't wait to see both Jason and Chris. Thanks for the info!

Ana Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 07:01 AM EST

luv to read you daily! And truly looking forward to see all of these shows!

TOm Hunter Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 11:44 PM EST

What?????? No love for Chris Elliot? Slightly bizarre comic actor from RAYMOND and GET A LIFE and Letterman's various shows, not to mention the movie CABIN BOY?? Can't wait to see Chris in something dramatic. YOU GO, CHRIS !!!!!!!!!

Todd Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 11:02 PM EST

Never watch any of those shows, so I don't care.

BewiXed1 Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 10:41 PM EST

I'm so glad we are finally going to meet Lassiter's estranged wife, and I think Justine Bateman will be great. There is lots of comic potential there.

Angela Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 09:59 PM EST

I never watched Seinfeld either. And, I think often comedians make good dramatic actors. My concern is that they *are* giving him a part that's dramatic. The "crazy" thing makes me think not crazy like your typical homicidal unsub, but crazy like "you'll split your sides laughing" which is not what I want from Criminal Minds. I'll watch no matter what. The way they sell it is just not putting me at ease. I'll be so happy to be wrong, though.

Brian Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 09:29 PM EST

But isn't Justine on strike. She was against the AFTRA contract and now she is working on an AFTRA show with Tony Shalub who was for the contract. How can she do that. Hypocrysy thy name is Justine.

Luis PJ Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

George Costanza gose crazy...what else is new :rolls: lol

caroldee Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 09:21 PM EST

I watched RObin Williams beat the whole bunch in one LAW and ORDER episode. HE got away and they left it open for him to return. I sure hope he does he was fantastic..Alexander can play anything he might be good too.. I would watch it and see for myself though.

RHTV Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 09:02 PM EST

Wait, what's gonna happen with James Brolin on SVU?

MJ Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

I think Justine will be great on PSYCH - and I am sooo ready for the new season to start!

Jack Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

Love Justine Bateman so much! Would love to see more of her!

KJ Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

Is there a chance they changed the direction of Brolin's character's storyline in that area that grosses me out? Can you get scoop on his character for us Michael, pleeeeeeeeease? With a Smurf collectable on top?

Allie Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

Lauren Graham (ex Gilmore Girls) as Jodi Lyn's sister, or would that be beneath her?

Don Lama Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 06:15 PM EST

I never watched Seinfeld either.

KJ Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

JAMES Brolin? Michael, are you sure it's not JOSH Brolin? You know what's supposedly gonna happen in this ep involving this character, don't you? I'm trying not to be sick here.

Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 05:41 PM EST

Yay for Brolin and Jason Alexander!

nicole Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

I am tired of Justine Bateman showing up on all my favorite shows! Please just keep her away from Grey's Anatomy!

LoneButterfly Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

I'm SO excited about Jason Alexander. I am the only person in America to not watch Seinfeld, but I have always thought he was a funny guy. And I love seeing comedians get the chance to do dramatic roles. (Robin Williams on L&O:SVU, for example.) Yay for Criminal Minds!

meg Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

Ohhhhh, Jodi Lynn O'Keefe is the girl from She's All That. I knew her name was familiar.

Mike Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

How about Alexa Davalos as Jodi Lynn's sister? The only problem is viewers might not be able to tell them apart.

Angela Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

Jason Alexander? I know actors are unfortunately typecast because people aren't willing to think of them in other roles, but it does give me a nervous pause. I have to tell myself that this is the show that James Van Der Beek did an amazing guest starring role in. I'd be less nervous if it wasn't described as a "crazy" role. I really hope they didn't write it as a comedic part - especially not a goofy one. I hope this stays true to the show - and that he doesn't take over the episode. That goes for every guest star, particularly "name" ones.

exoduso Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

Lol Jason Alexander as a serial killer? Cant way to see him attempt that one!

Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

Psych! I love that show so much, I can barely wait for the 18th! And Justine Bateman as the woman who can subdue Lassiter? perfect!
