Admit it: The resemblance is uncanny.
Beloved Everwood curmudgeon Debra Mooney has been cast as Chi McBride’s
chain-smoking, no-nonsense mother on Pushing Daisies, sources confirm
to me exclusively. As of now, Mooney’s on board for one episode, but
I’m told the role has significant recurring potential. Of course, Debra
Mooney’s playing her, so how could it not?
As I first teased in this week’s Ask Ausiello, Mooney’s character,
Calista Cod, is one of the best private investigators in
the biz. She arrives for a visit with her boy (and ex-partner) Emerson,
and winds up helping him with a murder case. As the two begin to
reconnect, Mama discovers that her chip off the old block has been
keeping some vital information from her.
And before you ask, no, Calista’s not blind.

Brilliant! I can’t wait for Mama Cod to meet Ned and Chuck!
I thought the latest Ausiello TV was supposed to come out today. Was I mistaken?
OMG! loved her in Everwood! she’s the perfect curmudgeon to his! yay!
That’s great news! I love her… I hope she does become a recurring character assuming I’ll love her role as well!
“Mama discovers that her chip off the old block has been keeping some vital information from him.” — So, his mother is a man?
Yay for Debra Mooney! So glad she’s coming back to TV!
Loved her as Edna in Everwood and every other performance she’s done, can’t wait to see her interact with the cast. Is a Debra Mooney/Kristin Chenoweth scene possible? Haha
Confusing pronouns aside, I bet she doesn’t know he has a daughter.
Ausiello, what I really want to know is will Raul Esparza be back? Please Please Please say yes!
Or she doesn’t know he likes to knit.
This is great news! Chi McBride is WONDERFUL on this delightful show. Please continue to provide him with the best possible foils so we can see the man work!
I just love hearing Pushing Daisies buzz period. I never watched Everwood (sorry!) but I know if she Emerson’s mama, then it will be awesome. I love Chi’s character, love the show. Have my fingers crossed with those Emmy nods.
