Exclusive: Katie Holmes Cruises to 'Eli Stone'

Yep, you read that headline correctly.

In arguably the biggest piece of stunt casting since How I Met Your Mother lassoed Britney Spears, sources confirm to me exclusively that Katie Holmes is returning to the small screen this fall on ABC’s sophomore drama, Eli Stone. A spokesperson for the show declined to comment, but I’m told Suri’s mama is on board for one episode. (For specifics on her character, check out my Live Press Tour Diary.)

The gig, which should give a nice boost to the critically-adored but marginally-rated series, marks a reunion between Holmes and her former Dawson’s Creek boss, Eli exec producer Greg Berlanti. Next month, Mrs. Tom Cruise heads to New York, where she’ll be making her Broadway debut this fall in a revival of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons.

So, what do you think, Eli fans? I’m thinking you’re embracing this news since it’ll no doubt expose Eli to millions of potential new viewers. Plus, it’s freakin’ Joey Potter! You with me?!

I’m interested. I actually thought she was great on Dawson’s but bad in every movie I’ve seen here in. I think she’s a decent tv actress but she doesn’t have the power to control a movie screen.

  • Brooke

Great news, i can’t wait. I like Eli Stone, but not a fan actually. Let’s see what Katie can do!
Ausiello, i NEED some One Tree Hill scoop, puh-lease. Specially regarding Brooke and Lucas!

  • couchgrouch

turned down The Dark Knight and is gonna be on Eli Stone…wow, she really traded UP!

  • Jake Lipson

This actually is fine with me. I never watched Dawson’s (too young at the time to notice it), but Katie’s good (she was solid in Batman Begins and good in Thank You For Smoking.) So as stunt casting for a ratings boost goes, this actually will work out, I think. And YAY if it boosts Eli up.

  • Dave

    Cool!

  • donner

Nice to see that Tom is taking her ankle monitor off for a week…I’d still rather watch George Michael on Eli Stone …sorry Katie…

  • Kathy

    HOLY SCOOP!

  • Anonymous

No – not excited. but I’m glad one network wasn’t stupid enough to cancel a show on the ‘bubble’ – ahem CBS

  • am

great show, and Katie is a great actress, I’m sure it will add to the fun and hopefully will bring more people in to watch.

  • Nasir

I love this show and anything that will keep it on the air will be fine with me. But, I also enjoy Ms. Katie, before all the Ms. Cruise thing.

    AWESOME!!!!!

    AWESOME!!!!!

  • Mike

    Katie Holmes is an actress?

  • Beverley

I love Eli Stone. It’s a cute show with an interesting premise. I will still watch the episode but will probably laugh at her “acting” since she’s really terrible at it.

  • Dolly

Yuck. She’s terrible since she hooked up with Cruise. It’s like she literally sold her soul. She just sucks the air out of the scenes she’s in.

  • Lindsey

The only reason I am happy about this is like you said hopefully will get people tuned in, I love the show & don’t want it to get canceled. I hate stunt casting.

  • Sue

I love Eli Stone so I’ll be watching it regardless of who the guest star is.

  • Rick

I always saw her as a television actress, I predict she’ll be back on a show full time within the next two years.

  • Caput

I heard she was making a cameo last night, so I checked out Eli Stone episodes online, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the show with Katie in it, it would spice it up a bit for me! I am sure she will do a better job of acting than Britney Spears did on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. I hope the show airs this month. I’m sure the media will let us know when she will be on the show!

  • Joni

Love “Eli Stone,” really couldn’t care less about “Katie Holmes,” but if her appearance provides a real boost for the show, then I’m all for it. But I’m not convinced she will be such a huge ratings draw; seriously, does she have any fans left?

  • fonzi

I LOVE Eli Stone and adding Katie Holmes will make it amazing. I can’t wait!

  • Gillian

Ah, okay. Last night I saw some pictures and thought they said that Tom Cruise was doing a cameo and I almost vomited.
I can deal with Katie on this fabulous show but she’s so upsetting to look at now.

  • Stephen S.

Great news. I adore Katie. She’s super talented.
And I love Eli Stone so I’ll definitely love seeing her in it. :)

  • Charlotte

    Joey Potter’s dead.

  • Ned

It definitely would be easier to deal with if there wasn’t that hideous photo of her attached to the story that reminds everyone that she’s gone from being Joey Potter to being Robo-Katie.

  • Deborah

Noooooo! Dammit, that just ruined Eli Stone for me.

  • Mary

I love Katie and think she’s beautiful. She’s a great actress too so all you people who keep dissing her need to back off!

  • Matt

I like Katie Holmes too, I think she was beautiful in The Ice Storm, Go, and The Wonder Boys. However, what is the alien pictured above, and what did it do with Katie?

  • graeme

That’s odd. Kinda unnecessary for her. I understand the Broadway move. It’s time to establish herself as the solid actress she is.
She needs to make up for the terrible decision to do “Mad Money” instead of doing “The Dark Knight”.

  • Holly

    WISE MOVE TPTB,BERLANTI AND ABC!!!!

  • zooey

I never saw Katie on theWB but loved her in Wonder Boys,Thank you for Smoking and Pieces of April.
Im sure she is doing this a favor to her former Creek producer. I rarely watch any tv because tv is full of crap these days but I might watch this out of curiosity.
